What is the Purpose of nvbc small groups?

NVBC small groups exist to help disciples of Jesus in their journey towards greater Christlikeness through a voluntary intentional time of Bible study, prayer, community, and hospitality in the context of close spiritual relationships.

As Christians, we are called to follow Christ towards Christlikeness. In fact, the purpose of the gospel for us is to make us mature, holy, and blameless like Jesus (Eph. 1:3-4; Col. 1:22, 28). We are slowly—but surely—being made into the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29; 2 Cor. 3:18).

The reality is that God has given us relationships in the local church to help us in our journey towards Christlikeness (1 Thess. 5:14; Heb. 3:12-13; 10:24-25). But the enemy will want to do everything he can to distract us from these relationships. Therefore, we must be serious about cultivating, fighting for, and protecting our spiritual friendships within the local church. This will protect us from becoming stagnant in our growth towards Christlikeness.

What Are NVBC Small Groups?

NVBC small groups are literally small groups of Christians from NVBC that meet together regularly with intentionality. The desire for NVBC small groups is to have groups of all kinds—open groups (with minimal requirements), closed groups (with specific requirements), and everything in between.

For the general “home group” style, the limit of people involved in one group would be around 10. If a group grew to 10, there would be discussion on splitting the group in the near future—allowing more people to be involved. Groups would strive to meet at least three times a month on a schedule and at a location that works for them (due to current provincial restrictions, the small groups are meeting virtually right now).

What is the Structure of NVBC Small Groups?

We simply want to help cultivate environments for genuine Christlike friendships to flourish within our local church. That being said, we would like to see every NVBC small group engaged in at least these four activities:

  1. the study/reflection of God’s Word together,

  2. prayer with one another,

  3. growing in friendship with one another, and

  4. showing hospitality to others.

are you interested in being A Small Group Leader?

Are you interested in leading an NVBC small group? That’s great! We’d ask that you first pray and seek God’s will privately, and then talk to the NVBC small group coordinator (at this point, Isaac) or elder. You can email Isaac here. If it looks like a good fit, then you’d go through a workshop to prepare you for hosting.

It also needs to be said that technically, NVBC small group leaders would be formal members of NVBC who gladly affirm the church’s Statement of Faith, along with the church’s mission, vision, and values.
